| Katalin Pócs was born 1963 in Budapest, Hungary. She is one of the leading members of the new generation of Hungarian composers. She studied composition under Prof. Emil Petrovics at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary and graduated with diplomas in music theory and composition. She has been honored with numerous prizes for her compositions, including first prize at the competition in memory of Ferenc Liszt in 1986, the forth prize at the Roodeport International Eisteddfod of South Africa Composer’s Competition in 1992, and second prize at The Music of the Future Composer’s Competition in Szeged, Hungary in 1993. In addition, she has received several scholarships, including the Kincses Kuratórium Schorarship in 1987, the Zoltán Kodály Scholarship from 1988 through 1991, and the Banff Center for the Arts Scholarship in 1998. Pócs’ compositions include orchestral works, chamber music, solo works, and electronic pieces, which have been introduced in Austria, Canada, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Poland, Rumania, Russia, and in the United States of America. Ballade for Harp was introduced in Chicago, Illinois in 1999 and in Budapest, Hungary in 2001 by harpist, Erzsébet Gaál. It is also recorded by Erzsébet Gaál on CD Harpa Hungarica 2001. |
